Sharing insights on alcohol, drugs and traffic safety

4-day live conference for ICADTS 2022

Background

For over 65 years the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety (ICADTS) Conference brings together delegates from the areas of public health and safety, traffic, and transport psychology, public health, law, medicine, economics, law enforcement, public policy, education, pharmacology, toxicology, forensic science, human factors, and alcohol intervention and rehabilitation. The ICADTS is an independent not-for-profit body whose only goal is to reduce mortality and morbidity brought about by misuse of alcohol and drugs by operators of vehicles in all modes of transport. Their tri-annual conference is a major international stage for exchanging research and policy developments between experts in the field. In 2022, the conference was hosted in the city of Rotterdam.

By design

The conference was designed to bring together policy, science and industry delegates from the areas of public health and traffic safety to discuss international policy, law enforcement and scientific study on driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs. It was one of the first conferences that was held in-person only again after the COVID-19 pandemic. We were approached by the Dutch branch of ICADTS to stand by their side and take care of logistics, onsite management, participant registration, abstract management, exhibition management and faculty management. Also we assisted them in using our congress app to communicate effectively and keep everyone up-to-date constantly. In co-creation with the LOC we designed 30 parallel sessions, 4 keynote speakers and an exhibition space to present the latest insights. Furthermore we put together an extensive social program, consisting of a welcome reception, a dinner award show and city tour.

Result

The conference was well attended and presented a range of novel technologies for roadside drug detection and presented in-car alcohol detection devices for the first time. In addition, facts sheets on cannabis and driving were disseminated to guide policymakers on cannabis and driving laws. The meeting also generated new ideas for targeted ICADTS working groups that will be operational over the next few years. But foremost, the conference provided an excellent platform to network, exchange ideas and build collaborations. De next meeting will take place in 2025 in Portugal.

“On behalf of the entire ICADTS Board I want to congratulate you and thank you for organizing T2022. It was an outstanding success! I heard nothing but positive comments about the conference. It was certainly one of the best conferences I have ever attended.” – James C. Fell, president of the ICADTS Board
