European Navigation Conference 2026

Navigating Europe’s future at ENC 2026

Background

After a series of successful editions, the European Navigation Conference returned in spring 2026, taking place in Vienna, Austria. ENC was hosted at the Austria Center Vienna (ACV), with the Austrian Institute of Navigation (OVN) leading the organisation under the umbrella of the European Group of Institutes of Navigation (EUGIN). As part of the ENC series, the conference continues its tradition of rotating across Europe’s leading PNT knowledge hubs.
Vienna provided a fitting setting, bringing together stakeholders from industry, academia, government and user communities. Known for its strong position in international collaboration and innovation, the city reflects the cross-border nature of the navigation sector and its continuous development. It is no coincidence that “Navigating the Future: Seamless, Smarter, Stronger” was selected as the central theme of ENC 2026. Globally, navigation technologies are evolving rapidly, driven by AI, increasing system complexity and the need for more resilient and integrated solutions.

By design

Following an advisory role during the 2025 edition in Wroclaw, Poland, the 2026 conference in Vienna marked a return to full organisational responsibility. The conference received a record number of abstract submissions. To accommodate as many high-quality presentations as possible, the programme was expanded to five parallel tracks. While this strengthened the scientific content and allowed more presenters to participate, it also introduced operational and financial challenges. An additional breakout room was required, resulting in extra costs within an already tight budget.  At the same time, registrations came in more slowly than expected, which meant that budgets and planning had to be continuously adjusted. This combination of increased programme-related costs and uncertainty around final attendance figures required a flexible and careful approach from all parties involved. Despite these challenges, the team continued to adapt where needed, balancing the ambition of a strong and inclusive scientific programme with the financial responsibility required to keep the organisation of the conference on track, while still maintaining the agreed quality and participant experience. Sustainability was also clearly reflected in the catering concept, where organic and responsibly sourced products played an important role.

The programme was expanded with the Young Navigator Evening, an initiative focused on connecting young professionals, (PhD) students and recent graduates in the field. What started just a year ago as a small informal meeting has quickly grown into a full community. To support this growth, a dedicated session and networking reception were added to the conference, giving young professionals a space to meet and network. This added a fresh dynamic to the programme, with clear potential for further growth in future editions.

Result

The European Navigation Conference 2026 was one to remember. What started as the ambition to organise a large-scale congress again quickly turned into a record-breaking edition. With 420 delegates from 35 countries, the conference brought together an international community full of energy and curiosity. There was also plenty of space for informal moments. The exhibition welcomed 16 exhibitors, and 330 participants joined the conference dinner, a clear highlight, even mentioned during the closing session as a personal favorite by Terry Moore (Chair of EUGIN).
Behind the scenes, this edition marked a clear step forward. Improved planning, tighter budget control and an upgraded system made the entire process run more smoothly. By building on past experience and refining our checklists and lessons learned, everything simply worked better. With this solid basis in place, the conference can now be developed further each year, becoming more sustainable, more inclusive and increasingly recognised as a must-attend event for the community.
As the icing on the cake, it was announced during the closing session that next year’s edition of the conference will take place at ESA ESTEC in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, hosted by the German Institute of Navigation (DGON). A well-known setting and a collaboration we are proud to continue into the next edition.
