EFCLIN is an association with 1,000 members. It is a close-knit community that meets annually at a conference with an exhibition showcasing the latest machines, tools, materials, instruments, software, and accessories relevant to the production of contact lenses and intraocular lenses. The 50th edition of their congress took place on the sunny Algarve coast. A beautiful and challenging location to organise a conference from afar.

The initial aim was to get to know each other and build trust as the new core PCO of EFCLIN. It was our first time working together, and within such a close-knit group, there are naturally certain habits and expectations. This requires alignment, connection, and an open mind to explore where there is room for improvement. We found this primarily in the details: clear speaker instructions, recognisable and fitting designs, and project management from the Netherlands, with regular trips to Portugal to explore on-site possibilities and manage the lead-up smoothly.
Result
The 50th EFCLIN congress, held from 25-27 April 2024 in Portugal, was a great success. The congress consisted of lectures, seminars, poster sessions, technical presentations, and the federation’s annual general meeting. We felt that we had established a pleasant and workable foundation for our collaboration. It’s a journey we undertake together, literally and figuratively, and as core PCO, we also focus on sustainable and aligned improvements. This allows us to work more efficiently over the years and elevate the congress as a whole. For instance, the integration between EventsAir and our congress app was highly valued. Everything was digital, no more printed booklets, and the ability to stay up-to-date at all times. We also see opportunities for improvement in the registration process, communication, and overall presentation. This will ensure EFCLIN has a stronger and professional identity and further strengthen the overall community feeling. We have already started preparations for the next edition, which will take place in Oslo in 2025.
