When the international ultrasonics community connects
THE 62ND IEEE INTERNATIONAL ULTRASONICS SYMPOSIUM.
Background
In September 2025, the international ultrasonics community came together in Utrecht for the 62nd IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS). As the flagship congress of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (IEEE UFFC-S), IUS creates a platform for scientific exchange, bringing together researchers, industry and students to share knowledge, present new research and explore the future of ultrasonics. From 15 to 18 September, participants from across the world gathered in Utrecht, a city with a longstanding connection to the field. It was here that Doppler ultrasound was first demonstrated experimentally, making Utrecht a meaningful setting for a congress focused on advancing ultrasound technologies and their applications.

IEEE UFFC-S has a partnership with Conference Catalysts as its Professional Congress Organiser. As Conference Catalysts is based in the United States, Congress by design was appointed as the local PCO. Our role was provide on-the-ground expertise and acting as the link between the international organising team and local venues, suppliers and stakeholders. Working closely with Conference Catalysts, we coordinated hotel management, venue operations, catering, audiovisual production, exhibition services and the social programme. The programme combined technical sessions, plenary presentations, short courses and student activities with community initiatives such as Women in Engineering and the Dutch Ultrasound Ecosystem Day. Alongside the scientific programme, an exhibition featuring 52 international companies strengthened the connection between academia and industry. Sustainability and accessibility also played a big role in the congress design. Utrecht’s central location enabled participants to travel easily by public transport, while the compact city centre allowed participants to move easily between activities on foot. For the conference dinner, participants travelled together by climate-neutral train, reducing transport movements while creating a shared experience that reinforced the sense of community throughout the event. A dedicated volunteer team supported on-site, helping attendees navigate and ensuring a welcoming experience for participants from around the world.
Result
IUS 2025 brought together the international ultrasonics community for four days of scientific exchange, collaboration and innovation. Researchers, industry professionals, students and sponsors connected through a programme that combined high-quality scientific content with valuable networking opportunities. Close collaboration between Conference Catalysts, Congress by design, the organising committee, suppliers and volunteers ensured the symposium ran smoothly. By combining international expertise with local knowledge, the project team created an environment where participants could focus on sharing knowledge and advancing the field of ultrasonics. The symposium reinforced Utrecht’s reputation as a host city and provided strong foundation for the continued growth of the IEEE IUS community as it looks ahead to future editions in Raleigh, Singapore and Dublin.
